Herbert Lee Pratt, He was born in the City of Brooklyn. November 21, 1871, Mr. Pratt was educated at Amherst College and after graduation, became a clerk in the Bergen Point Chemical Works. He next became assistant to the manager of the Standard Oil Company Pratt Works, and the Queens County Works, in Brooklyn. He was manager of these factories and in addition of the Kings County and Long Island Works, with offices at 26 Broadway, New York. He was active in the affairs of the Standard Oil Company of New York and of Charles Pratt & Co. Outside the manufacturing business, Mr. Pratt was a director of the Peoples Trust Company, of Brooklyn, one of the strongest financial institutions in the Borough, maintaining, beside the central bank, three branches in different sections of the city. He was interested as an investor in many and various enterprises that tend to assist in the larger development of the city in which he resides, and gives to them careful attention. Mr. Pratt was one of the directors of Pratt Institute, founded by his father, Charles Pratt, an institution that enables many young people in poor circumstances to obtain education and useful lines of instruction that would be otherwise unattainable. This institution is maintained by the Pratt family and is famed throughout the country for its beneficent advancement of struggling genius He was also interested in several other philanthropic and charitable foundations which the family has fostered, all of them constantly enlarging and extending their sphere of influence. Personally, he la an unassuming, hard working, democratic citizen, whose highest pleasure is to further the interests of his neighbors and the community of which he is a part. Herbert Lee Pratt was married April 28, 1897, to Miss Florence Gibb, and the union has been blessed with five children, in the following order: Edith G. Pratt. Herbert L. Pratt, Jr., Harriet B. Pratt, Florence G. Pratt, and Frederic R. Pratt. Mr. Pratt belonged to the Racquet and Tennis Club, the Alpha Delta Club, the Brooklyn Riding and Driving Club, the Hamilton Club, the Crescent Athletic Club and the Nassau Country Club.
