MERCER - Arthur S. Thomas, 83, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 7, 2016, at Redington Fairview General Hospital in Skowhegan after a rapid decline in health. Arthur was born on Nov. 11, 1932, at home in Oakland, to Earlan S. and Minnie E. (Perkins) Thomas, the third of seven children. He attended school in Oakland through the eighth grade, when he left school to work to help his family.

Arthur was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1956, serving three years.

After many odd jobs, Arthur began work at Diamond International in Oakland in 1951. He worked there until its closure in 1985. He finished his working years at Carlton Woolen Mill in Winthrop, retiring in 1996.Arthur was a member of the Masons for several years, along with Eastern Star. In recent years he attended services at the First Congregational Church in Norridgewock. In his younger years, he enjoyed spending his free time hunting and fishing. During his later years, he enjoyed building woodcrafts at his home shop.

He married Mary A. Ingraham on July 3, 1955. Together they traveled, spending time camping, boating, and visiting with many friends. In 1961, they suffered the loss of an infant daughter, Nancy Lee. The birth of their second daughter in 1981 completed their family, and the adventures continued. After retirement, Arthur found time for his much-loved hobby of woodworking, building furniture, and anything that people would ask for.

Arthur was predeceased by his mother, Minnie Thomas; his father, Earlan Thomas; daughter Nancy Lee Thomas; brother Neil Thomas; and sister Kathleen Thomas.

Surviving are his wife Mary Thomas; daughter Melanie A. Thomas-Winegardner; brothers Lowell Thomas and wife Pat, and Maurice Thomas and wife Pat; sisters Corrine Dudley and husband William, and Phyllis Warren.
