The Haystack Prayer Meeting Monument at Williams College marks the birthplace of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions, one of the most important organizations of its kind. The monument lists the names of the five participants in the Haystack Prayer Meeting. James Richards is listed second, and is the one of the five who became a missionary.

Gravestone inscription (English). It appears that this plaque is a replacement for the original one, which probably was becoming unreadable. (See transcription of original below James's biography.) Probably the people who made the new plaque did the best they could with the weather-worn script on the old one, and filled in what was obliterated with something that made sense.

This is James Richards Hall, at the Christian Theological Seminary in Marathunarmadam, Chunakkam, between Tellippalai and Jaffna, Sri Lanka. It houses dorm rooms, offices, and classrooms. The chapel and library are on the third floor.

This photo was taken in October 2016 by Lindley Kinerk, and is posted here with her kind permission.

[James Richards died in 1822; this building was erected and named for him in 1988. It is clear that in spite of the short time that Richards was in Ceylon, and in spite of the debility brought on by his illness (tuberculosis), he still is honored and held in high regard -- after almost 200 years. His character and personality must have had a major impact on his fellow missionaries and his successors, well beyond the usual platitudes expressed in an obituary.]
