A talented and fierce football player in both high school and college, John was awarded many honors including all-state tackle in high school, OVC All-American Tackle and four year letterman at Murray State University and John was later recognized in the Murray State University Athletic Hall of Fame.
John was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Hazel Prather Hackney.
He leaves two sons John L. Hackney III (Diana), David R, and daughter Tracy H. Scruggs, (Andrew), and sister, Margaret Hackney Chesnut. Grandchildren are Jeremy Hackney, Clay Scruggs, Leah Scruggs, Great-Grandchildren, Bailey Sharpe and McKenzie Sharpe.
John retired from Union Carbide/ Lockheed Martin after 38 years working in both Paducah and Oak Ridge facilities. Throughout his life, John was known for his commitment to his friends and community services. He was a little league coach, Duke of Paducah and awarded the honor of Kentucky Colonel. John was a member of West Hills Baptist Church and enjoyed the Monday lunch group called "The Romeos".
A celebration of John's life will be held at Click Funeral Home, Farragut on Wednesday, May 11, 2016. The family will receive of friends from 1 to 2 pm with the service at 2:00 pm. Burial will follow at Pleasant Forest Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donation can be made to West Hills Baptist Church, 409 North Winston Road, Knoxville, TN 37909, or the charity of your choice in his name.
