History shows Peter Mathias was one of the first farmers in the Spring Hill (Township) vicinity and later in the area known as Lake George (Township), which is four miles southeast of Elrosa, MN. By 1896, he owned a farm that covered 160 acres.
On 18 May 1880, Peter Mathias first married Katherina Minnerath in Saint Joseph, MN; he was age 28, she was 25. Born 18 March 1855 in Jefferson, WI; Katherina was the youngest of seven children {two sons & five daughters} born to Joseph Werner & Maria Anna (Ganzer) Minnerath.
After Katherina died in 1883, Peter second married Bernadina Athmann on 23 September 1884 in Spring Hill (Township) in Stearns County, MN; he was age 33, she was 22. Bernadina was the youngest of five children {four older brothers} born to Johann Heinrich & Katherine (Vienhage) Athmann.
