Son of Henry Chiles who died 1746 in Amelia, VA and Ann Harrelson who died after 09 October 1757 in Halifax, VA, Paul was named after his maternal grandfather. His birth year is estimated but given as 1718 from "Walter Chiles of Jamestown", by Joannie Chiles Eakin, 1983. He was a 2nd great grandson of the immigrant Walter Chiles.

While there is no official record, Paul is likely buried on the home plantation River View in the "garden graveyard" per historian Maud Carter Clement. The land is in what is now Pittsylvania County which was formed in 1767 from Halifax County, six years after Paul Chiles' death. On 18 November 1783 son Rowland Chiles, who later lived in Henry County, VA sold to Richard Davis of Pittsylvania County, VA 126 acres of land located south of the Staunton River and joining it, adjacent to John Ward the husband of Anne Chiles, sister to Paul and Rowland's aunt. The deed states that Paul Chiles lived on the lower part of the property and left it to son Rowland in his will of 1761, "I give to my son Rowland Chiles, not yet baptized, the remainder part of the land I now live on after my wife's decease." Rowland Chiles' deed is located in Pittsylvania County, Virginia Deed Book 7, pp. 152-153.

It should be noted here that the fenced cemetery seen in the photos of later owners is likely not that "garden graveyard" and it, along with any of the very old Chiles gravestones of those buried there have long since been lost to time.

"Of the sons of Colonel Henry Chiles of Amelia, Paul and his mother made their homes south of the river on lands that lay successively in Lunenburg, Halifax and Pittsylvania Counties.

Land continued to hold the interest of the Chiles men, and in 1750 brothers Paul and Henry Chiles were granted leave to take up 12,000 acres on Smith River, and 40,000 acres on the uppermost fork of Dan River."

Contrary to what many have written, I believe Paul Chiles married Ann Horsley, daughter of Robert Horsley & Frances Bassett & granddaughter of Rowland Horsley, all from Virginia. I believe they married in the Goochland-Hanover County, Virginia area sometime after 16 August 1740 when Anne, still unmarried, sold 200 acres of land on Little Byrd Creek to David Lawson & 22 June 1750 when "Paul Chiles and Anne his wife of Albemarle County sold to John Payne of Goochland County for £20, 200 acres of land on Little Byrd Creek.
Paul and Anne had five known children who were named in his will: Henry, Paul, Rowland, Elizabeth & Frances Chiles.

Paul names his wife Anne Executrix, along with brother John Chiles & brother-in-law John Ward as Executors of his will:
Halifax County Will Book O, 1753-1772, pages 129-131

Land in this area was originally patented in 1745 by Col. Henry Chiles who died in Amelia County prior to 20 March 1746 shortly after acquiring the land. His eldest son Paul inherited much of the land & in 1753 sold some of it to Valentine Allen of Halifax County, said by some to be the husband of Susanna Chiles.

Allen sold the land in 1757 to John Ward, husband of Anne Chiles, sister to Paul & Susanna. At the death of John Ward in 1816, the land went to his son Henry Ward who died in 1823, then to Henry's daughter Henrietta Eloise Ward who married William Jones McElhiney. William and Henrietta sold the land to Thomas Cook & wife Dorothy S. Brown Cook in 1834 & Thomas left it to his granddaughter Amanda Cook Graves, wife of Jeremiah Hunt Graves.

Paul Chiles also wrote in his will about land where he lived being left to his wife & sons Henry & Rowland - "I lend my loving wife Anne Chiles all my land where I now dwell during her life, then after her decease I give to my son Henry Chiles one hundred and forty acres at the upper end where I now live." & "I give to my son Rowland Chiles, not yet baptised, the remainder part of the land I now live on after my wife's decease...". This could also be considered the land mentioned above by Maud Carter Clement.

It is noted again here as the following land:
