US Soldier killed at the Battle of the Little Big Horn. Pvt Summers enlisted for 5 years into the U.S. Army on April 24, 1871, in Garlington, KS. He was described as 5''8", blue eyes, sandy hair with a ruddy complexion. His civilian occupation was listed as farmer. Summers was assigned to Company I, 6th U.S. Infantry Regiment at Drywood Creek, KS. After Summers' enlistment expired, he reenlisted with the 7th U.S. Cavalry Regiment at Ft Lincoln, Dakota Territory. He was assigned to Company M. During the Battle of the Little Bighorn Company M was attached to Major Reno's battalion. Summers was killed during the retreat from the Valley Fight near the Little Bighorn River. After the battle Summers' remains were found to be in an "awful state of mutilation." He was likely buried where he had been found.
