He was described as 5'8", blue eyes, light hair with a fair complexion. His civilian occupation was listed as clerk. On October 21, 1873, Stungewitz reported for duty at Ft Rice, Dakota Territory. He was assigned to Company C 7th U.S. Cavalry Regiment. At the Battle of the Little Bighorn, Company C was commanded by 2nd Lt Henry Harrington and was attached to LTC George A Custer's battalion. Stungewitz was killed during the battle. There were no reports after the battle that his remains were identified. Therefore, it is likely his unidentified remains were buried where his body had been found. In 1881 all known battlefield burials were moved to a mass grave on Last Stand Hill.
