Early Chicago area settler, John Rutherford came to Cook Co., Illinois in 1845 with his wife, Eliza (nee LOVETT), and two sons, Joseph William and Thomas A. They settled in the village of Mont Clare in the Jefferson Twp., Cook Co., IL. (John and Eliza also had two daughters; Eliza, who died as a small child, and Julia A., who married A.J. Steele. Both daughters were born in Jefferson Twp., Cook Co., IL) John purchased 120 acres in the Mont Clare area, and with his sons' help, he farmed the land until his death in 1884. John Rutherford was the son-in-law of one of the most prominent men of Jefferson Twp., Joseph John Lovett, who, along with members of another pioneering group, the Winthrop & George Merrill families, was one of the very first pioneers to settle in the Mont Clare/Leyden/Galewood area. (Lovett settled in Jefferson Twp. in 1834). Documents have been found which indicate John's full name may have been John Joseph Rutherford. The original wood-frame Rutherford family home, built in 1874, still stands in Mont Clare at 2333 N. Oak Park Avenue. Rutherford Avenue in the Mont Clare area was so named to honor the original Rutherford settlers in the area.
