US Soldier killed at the Battle of the Little Big Horn. Pvt Shea enlisted into the US Army on September 6, 1875, in Boston, Mass. He was described as 5'6", gray eyes, brown hair, with a ruddy complexion. His civilian occupation was hostler. On October 21, 1875, Shea reported for duty at Ft Lincoln, Dakota Territory. He was assigned to Company C, 7th US Cavalry Regiment. Company C was commanded by two time Medal of Honor recipient and LTC George A Custer's brother, Captain Thomas Custer. At the Battle of the Little Bighorn Company C was attached to LTC Custer's Battalion. Shea was killed during the battle. After the battle many soldiers from Company C were found on what had been the right flank of Company L. Shea's remains were never identified. It is likely he was first buried where his body had been found. In 1881, all known battlefield burials were moved to a mass grave on Last Stand Hill. He was survived by his mother, Ellen Shea, who received an army survivor's pension on December 21, 1885.
