US Soldier killed at the Battle of the Little Big Horn. Pvt Schmidt enlisted into the US Army on November 14, 1872, in New York, NY. He was described as 5'8", brown eyes, brown hair, with a fair complexion. His civilian occupation was laborer. On December 9, 1872, Schmidt was assigned to Company L, 7th US Cavalry Regiment at Yorkville, South Carolina. Company L was commanded by 1st Lt James Calhoun. Calhoun was the brother-in-law of of LTC George A Custer and Captain Custer. At the Battle of the Little Bighorn, Company L was attached to Custer's Battalion. Schmidt was killed during the battle. His remains were never identified. It is likely he died with most of Company L on Calhoun Ridge or the area between Calhoun Ridge and Last Stand Hill. Schmidt was probably first buried where his unidentified remains had been found on the battlefield. In 1881 all known battlefield burials were moved to a mass grave on Last Stand Hill.
