Daniel Michael Grant, of Sycamore, died peacefully in his home in the presence of his loving family on Sunday May 1, 2016.

A man of strong Catholic faith, he was born March 5, 1951 in Franklin Park, IL where he attended St. Gertrude Elementary School. He graduated from Woodstock High School (Class of 1969), where he met some of his dearest life-long friends, and went on to major in Marketing at Northern Illinois University.

After a successful career in sales and sales management for Burroughs Corporation, Shared Medical Systems, and XA Systems, Dan launched Sales Consultants of Western McHenry County, later called The McHenry Group, in 1991. Respected and loved by his employees for his integrity and generosity, Dan supported each one of them in every way he could, professionally or personally. He especially loved mentoring young people as they began their careers, taking time to review resumes, practice interviewing techniques, even connecting them to potential employers, when he wasn't hiring them himself. He blessed many lives in this way.

Dan was a dedicated sports fan, golfer and bowler. What he may have lacked in talent on the golf course he made up for with his quick-witted and self -deprecating sense of humor. A lifelong fan of the Chicago White Sox, long-suffering fan of the Chicago Bears and proud fan of the NIU Huskies, he loved sharing in these trials and tribulations with good friends. Dan had a way of appreciating the simple things in life. He enjoyed seeing the robins return in the spring and watching the cardinals visit his bird feeder; he loved watching the sunrise and sunset from the many beaches he visited over the years. There was no escaping "Thunder" Dan's wonderful sense of humor and sharp wit, which was evident in his office sales contests, celebrations, hilarious voicemails, annual office trips, on the golf course, or with his friends.

He is survived by his children, Meagan Grant (Matt Hillen), Daniel Grant, Trisha Grant (Mark Burton); grandchild, Margaret Hillen, brother Tom Grant (Kay Grant); sisters, Marianne Lewin, Patricia Radosh (Ron Radosh); and former spouse and mother of his beloved children, Patricia Zarnikow. He is the proud uncle of many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and will undoubtedly be looking down upon his second grandchild arriving in May with the same love and pride that he had for his darling Maggie.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Anthony and Mary (Dever) Grant; and brother-in-law, Al Lewin, who is undoubtedly welcoming him into heaven with a delicious prime rib (to be followed by a refreshing nap).

He was an active member of the Sycamore community for the past ten years and previously a long time resident of Marengo, where he generously served his community as a volunteer coach, school board member and CCD teacher at Sacred Heart Church. He gave generously to many charities and served as a mentor to business students through Northern Illinois University. His humor, generosity and kind spirit will not be forgotten. He truly was a heck of a guy.

Visitation will be on Thursday from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at the Butala Funeral Home and Crematory, 1405 DeKalb Ave., Sycamore, IL 60178. His funeral mass will be on Friday, May 6th at 10:00 AM at the Newman Catholic Church, 512 Normal Road, DeKalb, IL. Burial will be at the Elmwood Cemetery in Sycamore.

To make a lasting tribute honoring the life of Dan, the family asks that contributions be made to help those in need receive the same compassionate care JourneyCare provided for their family. Contributions can be sent to JourneyCare Foundation, 2050 Claire Court, Glenview, IL 60025.
