US Soldier killed at the Battle of the Little Big Horn. Pvt Post enlisted into the US Army on July 17, 1866, at Detroit, MI. He was described as 5'7", blue eyes, light hair with a ruddy complexion. His civilian occupation was shoemaker. On September 16, 1866, Post was assigned to Company M, 4th US Cavalry Regiment at Camp Sheridan, TX. His daily duties were saddler. In December 1868 he was promoted to corporal. At the expiration of his enlistment on July 17, 1869, Post was discharged at Austin, TX. On June 28, 1875 Post reenlisted at Chicago, Ill. On July 29, 1875, he was assigned to Company I, 7th US Cavalry Regiment at Ft Lincoln, Dakota Territory. Company I was commanded by Captain Myles Keogh. At the Battle of the Little Bighorn Company I was attached to LTC George A Custer's battalion. Post was killed during the fighting. He likely died at Company I's last position between Calhoun Ridge and Last Stand Hill. His remains were never identified. Post unidentified remains were likely buried where they had been found. In 1881 all known battlefield burials were moved to a mass grave on Last Stand Hill. Post was survived by his wife, Maggie. There is no record of any children. His wife received a pension for the loss of her husband on August 18, 1877.
