Sam Woody was born in Tennessee, May 24, 1826, spending his youth in the Tennessee mountains. On October 19, 1848, he married in the community where he lived to Emeline Breazeale (born April 18, 1833.
He arrived in Texas in March, 1850, and in the spring of 1854 pioneered his way into Wise County to become its first permanent settler.
Sam was remembered as a natural humorist and optimist who raised a stalwart family. The names of his children, the dates of their birth and the persons to whom they were married are as follows:
