He was described as 5'8", gray eyes, brown hair with a florid complexion. Moodie's civilian occupation was coachman. It was believed Moodie had been a dragoon in the British Army, before coming to the US. On February 6, 1875, he was assigned to Company A, 7th US Cavalry Regiment at Livingston, AL. His daily duties were quartermaster teamster. At the Battle of the Little Bighorn, Company A was assigned to Major Marcus Reno's battalion. Moodie was killed during the retreat from the Valley Fight to Reno Hill. It is likely Moodie was buried where his remains had been found. In 1881, all known battlefield burials were moved to a mass grave on top of Last Stand Hill.
