He was described as 5'6", brown hair, blue eyes with a dark complexion. His civilian occupation was teamster. On October 21, 1875, Meyer was assigned to Company C, 7th US Cavalry Regiment at Ft Lincoln, Dakota Territory. Company C was commanded by two time Medal of Honor recipient and LTC George A Custer's brother, Captain Tom Custer. At the Battle of the Little Bighorn, Company C was assigned to LTC Custer's battalion. Meyer was killed during the battle. His body was not identified. It is likely Meyer's unidentified remains were buried where they had been found. In 1881, all known battlefield burials were moved to a mass grave on top of Last Stand Hill.
