Derell grew up in Central and attended schools there. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was stationed in the Aleutian Islands. After returning from the service, Derell married Helen and made their home in Pleasant Grove where they raised their three children. Derell worked for Geneva Steel and retired after 36 years of service. Derell loved music and enjoyed camping, fishing, and being in the outdoors. He could make anything grow, and enjoyed his flower gardens. His great love in life was for his family and looked forward to spending time with children and grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife Helen of Pleasant Grove; three children: Joan (Wes) Smith, Orem; Terry (Marv) Erickson, Pleasant Grove and Kent (Linda) Barney, Lehi; nine grand-children and 11 great-grandchildren. Additional survivors include siblings: Gladys Curtis, Zelpha Franks, Boyd Barney, and Madge Snow. Derell was preceded in death by his grandson, Cole Barney.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 5, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. in the Olpin Family Mortuary Chapel, 494 South 300 East, Pleasant Grove where friends may call one hour prior to services. Interment will be in the Pleasant Grove City Cemetery.
