Margaret Lambert Brame
LORAINE--Margaret Lambert Brame, 87, of Loraine died Thursday, Dec. 11, 2003, in a local hospital. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. on Sunday at Loraine First Baptist Church with Rev. Bryan Waddell officiating. Burial will follow in the Loraine Cemetery under the direction of Kiker-Seale Funeral Home.
She was born April 25, 1916, south of Sweetwater in the Cottonwood Community, to Jess Lambert and Susie Withers Lambert. After she graduated from Sweetwater High School, she attended Commercial College in Fresno, Calif. and Abilene. She was married to Loyd Brame on July 4, 1943, in Dallas. After her marriage, she moved only a few miles west across Mitchell County line northeast of Loraine on his farm where she lived for more than 60 years.
She was retired from Mitchell County ASCS office with almost 28 years of service. All of these were in Colorado City, except the first five, which were in Sweetwater. After this, she worked at Taylor Mearse Insurance Agency in Loraine for 10 years. Herbert Mearse sold the agency to Ratliff Insurance in Colorado City, and for two years she worked for them part-time.
In 1946, she helped organize the North Loraine Home Demonstration Club. She served as its first president and again in 200-2001. It is known as the Extension-Education Club. She served many years on the Board of Directors of Loraine Senior Citizens, at times she was secretary, vice-president and president.
When her two children were attending Loraine ISD, first grade-graduation, she was very active in school activities. She also served as Girl Scout Cookie Chairman and on the Program Committee of the West Texas Girl Scout Council for several years. As long as Loraine Business and Professional Club was in existence, she was an active member.
Before her health began to fail, she traveled extensively. She visited some part of all 50 states and some part of all continents except Australia. In 1995, Margaret was named Mitchell County Senior Citizen of the Year. She attended First Baptist Church of Loraine for 60 years.
She is survived by one son, Kenneth Brame and wife Judy of Springfield, Mo.; one daughter, Debbie Zabica and husband Steve;and one grandson, Joshua Zabica, all of St. Joshua, Mo.; a number of nieces and nephews, including Raymond Lambert, Jr. of Sweetwater.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Jess and Sue Lambert; her husband, Loyd Brame; three brothers, Clifton (Jack) Lambert, Raymond (Ted) Lambert and J.D. Lambert; one sister, Irene Jennings; and their spouses.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Loraine Senior Citizens Center.
Visitation will be held at Kiker-Seale Funeral Home on Saturday, Dec. 13, 2003, from 6-8 p.m.

MARGARET LAMBERT BRAME
Margaret Elizabeth Lambert, daughter of Jess and Susie (Withers) Lambert, was born on April 25, 1916, at the Lambert home place five miles south of Sweetwater on the hill southeast of Cottonwood school.
Margaret attended the one-room school one year before the two-room school as built. She attended this school until she started to school at South Ward (John R. Lewis Elementary) school in Sweetwater. Her older brothers and sister remembered the difficult time they had when they went to town to school, so they asked their parents to send their little sister to town to school at an earlier age.
There were no school buses, so Margaret and her mother stayed in Sweetwater from Monday morning until Friday afternoon; then they spent the weekend on the farm. This continued for one full school year and part of the next until Margaret's father, Jess Lambert, injured one of his hands very badly in a railroad box car while loading cattle. This was before trucks were used to ship cattle and all cattle were shipped by rail. Jess Lambert drove his daughter to school the balance of the year. At this time, he was elected sheriff of Nolan County and he and his family moved into Sweetwater.
There were many community gatherings at the Cottonwood schoolhouse. On Christmas Eve a program was given and presents were distributed from the large cedar Christmas tree.
All of Margaret's life her family had a car, but one of her fondest memories, while living in the Cottonwood community, was taking buggy rides with the Calvert children. Nona and W. D. Calvert would come by with their horse and buggy and they would go to the Boothe Ranch and visit with Kathleen and Mary Ruth Evans.
When Margaret started to town to school, ready-made children's clothes were a sad lot. Nona Calvert made her dresses for her. While Nona was attending college, she became ill and had to return home and then passed away. She was a very talented, intelligent and caring person and was greatly missed by Margaret and her family.
Margaret graduated from Sweetwater High School in May 1932, when the depression was felt the most. Due to the economy, there wasn't a school annual and few students were able to buy a senior ring.
After a year, Margaret went to California and stayed with her sister, Irene and her husband, and attended Central California Commercial College in Fresno, California. She returned home for the summer and had planned to return in the fall, but due to her brother-in-law's job relocation, she did not return. Margaret went to Draughons Business College in Abilene, Texas, for a few months; then she tried the business world. Jobs were not plentiful and the pay was extremely low. Her first office job in Sweetwater as a bookkeeper paid $8.00 a week, which was finally increased to $10.00 a week.
Margaret married Loyd Perry Brame on July 4, 1943, and they moved to his farm northeast of Loraine, Texas, where she still lives. Her husband died June 4, 1980.
Margaret worked at various office jobs most of her adult life. While in Sweetwater, she worked almost five years for Nolan County AAA (government farm program at county level) and later worked in Colorado City i Mitchell County for the same type organization, later known as PMA, ASC and ASCS (Agricultural Stabilization Conservation Service). She retired with almost 30 years' service. After one year of retirement, she returned to the work force and has worked in a small independent insurance agency in Loraine, Texas, since that time.
She and Loyd had two children, both of whom graduated from Loraine High School. Kenneth Loyd Brame, who was born on October 7, 1947, is married to Nancy Ober. He received two degrees from Texas Tech University and is presently living in Birmingham, Alabama, working as Director Merchandise Planning and Control for Parisian, a chain of department stores. Daughter Debbie Irene was born March 4, 1955 and is married to Steven Anton Zabica and is presently living in Midland, Texas. She is a Field Executive with Permian Basic Girl Scout Council in Odessa, Texas. She graduated from Howard Payne University.
