Ulrich is believed to be the son of Jacob 'Jost' Engel (1664 Grosshchestetten, Rothenbach, Canton Bern-Jan 22 1751 Corgemont, Jura, Canton Bern) and Christina Rohrer (July 19 1675 Bollingen, Sankt-Gallen, Canton Bern- unknown). His parents were married on May 14 1696 in Bollingen, Sankt-Gallen, Rothenbach. Ulrich was baptized in Würzbrunnen and died in Donegal Township. According to the research of Janet and Robert Wolfe, he was born in the hamlet of Farneren, now called Farnern.

He was married to Anna Brächbühl (Oct 6 1715 Trachselwald, Canton Bern-June 26 1764 Wildcat Station, Donegal Twp) on March 4 1736. She was the daughter of Christen Brächbühl and Anna Steiner. They sailed with their family from Rotterdam on the ship 'Phoenix,' under the command of Capt. John Spurrier. They landed at Philadelphia on October 1 1754. Ulrich and his family established a homestead in Wildcat, which later became a railroad station outside of Marietta. They were the parents of the following known children (all born in Corgemont, Jura, Canton Bern):

1-Catharine Engel (1739-1807) married Peter Witmer
2-Christian Engel (1740-after 1751 Corgemont)
3-Anna Engel (1741-1805) married Henry Groff
4-Ulrich Engle (1743-1799) married Magdalena Bicksler (1741-Sept 13 1821), daughter of Christian Bixler and Catherina Sharer
5-Maria Engel (1744-1764 Donegal Twp)
6-Johann 'Hans' B. Engel (1745-1824) married Elizabeth Schock; Hans was a Private in the Revolutionary War (DAR Ancestor #A036778)
7-Barbara Engel (1748-1783) married Benjamin Musser
8-Christina Engel (1750-1786) married Jacob Musser
9-Jacob 'Yokeli' Engel (1753-1833) founder of the River Brethren Church, a branch of the Mennonite faith, in 1776 it became a separate organization with Jacob as the first bishop; married Veronica Schock

Ulrich wrote a letter to his relatives in Switzerland on December 7 1755. A translation of part of this letter is as follows~

"We arrived safely in this country, as we had wished. However, we lost many of our possessions in another ship that ran into trouble and sank. I and the others, are all as sound and healthy as when we were in Switzerland." [from the Engle Family website]

Ulrich died at age 45. He and Anna were buried on their homestead, Wildcat Farm. A memorial marker was erected in 1878 by descendants.
