Born at Galston, Ayrshire.

A son of the Rev. Dr. Robert Stirling (25th. October, 1790 – 6th. June, 1878), inventor of the Stirling engine (1816).

Locomotive Superintendent of the Glasgow & South Western Railway, 1866-1878. He was preceded in this post by elder brother Patrick Stirling (29th. June, 1820 – 11th. November, 1895), who was the first Locomotive Engineer of the G. & S.W.R., 1853-1866.
Locomotive Superintendent of the South Eastern Railway, 1878–1898.

The Glasgow Herald, Wednesday, January 17th., 1917. Death notice:-
"STIRLING.- At Doon, Ashford, Kent, on the 12th. inst., James Stirling, J.P., aged 81, formerly locomotive engineer South-Eastern Railway and Glasgow and South-Western Railway."

Free BMD - Death registered W. Ashford 2a 1528 (Q1 1917) James Stirling (81).

The Glasgow Herald, Thursday, March 8th., 1917 (page 8):- "HOME NEWS IN BRIEF. Mr James Stirling, of Doon, Ashford, Kent, formerly locomotive engineer Glasgow and South Western Railway, aged 81 years, left estate valued at £22,982." (By contrast it was reported in the press that his brother, Patrick, left estate in excess of £118,000.....)

Younger son:- James Hamilton Stirling m. Florence Laura Dorman 23.4.1908; All Souls Church, Langham Place, London. Only daughter of Mr. A. M. Dorman, 10, Manor Rd., Folkestone.
25.4.1908 to take up appointment as works manager and assistant superintendent Ceylon Government Railways.
