CAPT. JOHN BAKER DEAD
Retired Police Officer Had Record of 34 Years in Department

John Baker, retired captain of the police, died yesterday afternoon shortly after 1 o'clock at his home, 1315 West Mulberry Street, after an illness of six weeks. He would have been 70 years old on February 14.

Ex-Captain Baker's record on the Baltimore police force extended over a period of 34 years, during which time he serve on nearly every rung of the ladder. He was appointed patrolman on May 22, 1867, at the age of 22 and assigned to the Western district. A few years later he became a sergeant, and in 1883 earned promotion to a lieutenancy. Up to the time he became a captain he remained in the Western district, and in 1884, when he succeeded Captain Lepson as head of that district, he was transferred to the Southwestern district, which had been a separate district but a short time. Later he captained the force at the Northwestern district, and it was from there that he was retired September 12, 1901.

Since his retirement he has been employed at the Baltimore Trust Company, and it was while on his way to his work there one morning six weeks ago that he felt pains in his back. He returned home and his condition grew worse. X-ray treaments were given him for three weeks at Mercy Hospital, but without effect.

Ex-Captain Baker was born in Germany in 1845, and came to America when but 6 years old. He learned the trades of cigarmaker and baker, and followed those occupations up to the time of his appointment to the police force. He married Mrs. Martha E. Close Baker, who was head matron of policewomen when she met ex-Captain Baker.

Besides his widow, tow daughters and four stepsons survive him. They are Mrs. Clara Joyce and Mrs. Alice Yost, and Harry Close, William Herbert Close, John Vincent Close and James G. Close.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning at 11 o'clock at the home on West Mulberry Street, and at 11:30 at the Christian Temple, Fulton and Penrose Avenues, in which Captain Baker was a deacon. Delegations of police, the Grand Army of the Republic, the Royal Areanum and the Elks will attend both services and the pallbearers will be selected from active and retired members of the police force. The Rev. Peter Ainslie, pastor of Christian Temple, will conduct the services. Burial will be at Loudon Park Cemetery.
