John and his wife Maggie Voigt had a farm east of Sartell, Minnesota; which at that time was an unincorporated village.
However, he died from typhoid fever 8.5 years into the marriage, leaving a wife expecting their fifth child. His funeral was on the morning 14 December 1893 at Holy Angels Pro-Cathedral in Saint Cloud according to the Sauk Rapids Sentinel newspaper.
Given the financial situation, the farm was lost to creditors, prompting his wife and children to move in with her sister on Saint Cloud's south side.
As of the late 20th Century, John's farmland is occupied by the Evergreen Village mobile home park, Sartell's Val Smith Park, Sartell's residential neighborhood "Hillcrest Addition", and Sartell's residential neighborhood "Parks Edge Estates."

Gravesite Details
John's gravestone in Calvary Cemetery (a fairly new cemetery in those days) is mistakenly labeled "1863-1894," presumably indicating that the stone maker carved it after the new year.
