Jacob Spangler was born on 25 July 1772 in Moore Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, a son of Georg Christian Spängler and Anna Maria Ensli. He was baptized on 10 August 1772 at Emmanuel's Evangelical Lutheran Church.

He was listed as a single freeman together with his brother John George Spangler on the tax list for Miles Township, Northumberland County (present-day Centre County), Pennsylvania in 1797, but he was absent in 1799.

He apparently predeceased his father, as he was not mentioned in the will of Georg Christian Spängler dated 27 June 1800.

John Blair Linn noted in his writings (1883) that Saint Peter's Lutheran and Reformed Cemetery in Rebersburg contained many graves marked only by fieldstones not bearing inscriptions.

"In the old section of the graveyard there are but few tombstones with inscriptions, and these were brought to the valley at considerable expense and inconvenience. There are several hundred graves that have merely small flat stones at the head and foot, or no mark whatever. Such has not been the fate of the poor alone, but some of the richest and at one time most influential pioneer citizens of the neighborhood 'sleep their last sleep' in unknown graves." (History of Centre and Clinton Counties, Pennsylvania, page 363)

Today, the cemetery has been cleared of such markers, but it is believed that Jacob Spangler is buried in one of the many unmarked plots.
