John Henry Spangler was born on 15 January 1763 in Northampton County, Pennsylvania, a son of Georg Christian Spängler and Anna Maria Ensli. He was baptized on 31 January 1763 at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran ("Dryland") Church in Hecktown, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, sponsored by his grandmother, Susanna.

He was known by his middle name, "Henry".

He removed to Buffalo, Northumberland County (present-day Union County), Pennsylvania in 1785, where he joined his brother Christian Spangler and farmed 150 acres.

Farmer with 150 acres, 2 horses and 1 cow in Buffalo, Northumberland County (present-day Union County), Pennsylvania in 1786 and 1787.

Early settler of Sugar Valley, Pennsylvania in 1806, crossing from Rebersburg through Spangler Gap. He had a 400 acre farm along Down Fishing Creek, with the first sawmill in the valley by 1811.

He died at his home just south of Tylersville in Logan, Clinton County, Pennsylvania.
