Our beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, Aletha Margaret (Payne) Green passed away peacefully on April 14, after a brief illness. She was the eldest of three children born at their home in Omak, on October 9, 1927 to Lorenzo and Esther (Davisson) Payne. Her brother Leonard and sister Leona followed. The Payne family lived in the Omak and Okanogan area, with Aletha graduating from Okanogan High School in 1946. She grew up surrounded with and remained close to her extended family of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends through her entire 88 years. She was a member of the Okanogan School band playing the saxophone, and was a member of the Order of Rainbow for Girls, serving all the Stations and became Worthy Advisor in 1945. After High School graduation, she attended schools in Spokane, first beauty school to be a "beautician" until she broke her arm roller-skating, then Kinman Business School to become a bookkeeper, while working part time as an elevator operator at The Crescent Department store. Aletha met Clyde W. Green of Tonasket, at a dance at "Maple Hall" (between Omak and Okanogan) and they were married July 25, 1948. They made their first home in Portland, Oregon, then Wenatchee in 1950, until they purchased the Shell Oil Distributorship in Chelan. They moved to Chelan with their three young children, Resa, Randy and Roger in 1953. Aletha was a homemaker, and was known for her creative energy, and was a talented home decorator, remodeler, seamstress, landscaper and flower gardener.
While keeping the books for the family fuel oil business Aletha also was able to enhance, participate or lead her children's activities of Cub and Boy Scouts, Blue Birds, Camp Fire, Rainbow, ballet and piano, as well as any educational opportunities. She was a founding member of Lake Chelan Arts and Crafts, and also was a member and President of Lake Chelan Soroptimist International.
She was a life long member of Lake Chelan Lutheran Church.
In 1982, with her children grown, she started a kitchen supply and coffee bean sales store, " Kitchen Kabinet" in downtown Chelan. She enjoyed creating the space, the products, greeting her customers, and developing her successful business. Aletha became a retailer of Starbucks coffee beans, in 1982 getting her stores first coffee grinder, and her fresh roasted coffee beans from the first Starbucks warehouse on Airport Way in Seattle.
Aletha continuously exhibited enthusiasm and energy for all the people and activities in her life. She treasured and was blessed with the close bond of her family, extended family and friends. She rejoiced in the times she could share with her children and grandchildren, and felt so blessed to add 5 great-grandchildren to this love. Grandma Aletha was a devoted grandmother who took immense pleasure in her time spent with and involvement in all her grandkids activities.
Aletha and Clyde built, enjoyed and entertained at their home on Lake Chelan, hosting numerous celebrations, weddings, reunions, anniversaries, graduations, family dinners and holidays. Aletha loved boat rides on the lake, and always had a big smile as they were getting away up lake to camp or stay at their cabin at Meadow Creek Lodge. Clyde and Aletha also traveled around the United States, Canada, and England. They both enjoyed square dancing, which also took them on trips south in their fifth wheel trailer, and eventually they purchased a winter home in Yuma Arizona. In Yuma they continued life long friendships, made new friends, became neighbors to "old" neighbors again, and lived by her brother Leonard.
One of Aletha's greatest pleasures in life was people. She had an incredible ability to remember and recount the connections and stories of happenings, her relatives, and friends, from long ago, or yesterday. She left for her children a historical legacy of these stories, and pictures and albums and notes. Her smile was constantly present and remembrances of her mention most often that she was always so kind, so caring, sweet and gracious.
Son Roger, her brother Leonard and sister Leona, as well as her parents preceded Aletha in death.
Aletha is survived by her husband of 67 years, Clyde, daughter Resa (Kerry) Glessner, grandchildren John J, Amelia (Jesse), son Randy (Sue) Green, grandsons, Jared (Mary), Lucas (Kim), and great grandchildren, Conrad, Breslynn, Grady, Cohen, Zeke and extended family of brother and sister in laws, cousins, nieces, nephews, and devoted friends.
Visitation at Precht Chapel Chelan, from 4-7 p.m. on Wednesday April 27.
Service at Lake Chelan Lutheran Church Thursday, April 28 at 1 pm. Casket will remain closed at the service.
