A light went out on Earth; a star is born in Heaven.

Real, live angels do exist on earth. Our family knows this because we were blessed to have one as the leader of our family. Alice "Frances" H. Galindo, the youngest child of Pedro B. Hernández, Sr. and María L. de Hernández, was beloved by her entire family and blessed the lives of everyone who met her. She had the kindest heart and saw only the good in everyone. Alice was accepting of all and judgmental of none. She found the joy in everything and had the determination to overcome any obstacle. Mom lived a full life marked by hard work and a deep love of her family. Grammy was eternally supportive of her children and adored all her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Tía Frances was the epitome of all that is good in humanity.

Born April 20, 1932, in San Antonio's Sunny Slope neighborhood, Alice Hernández was a 1950 graduate of Fox Tech High School, earning her Licensed Vocational Nursing (LVN) degree. She then worked across Main Avenue at the Baptist Memorial Hospital, where in 1952 during Fiesta Week in San Antonio, she was introduced to a young Marine home on leave.

On December 28, 1952, she married Gilbert Roland Galindo, Sr., may he rest in peace. Together they had six children and lived in Virginia, North Carolina, California, Hawaii, and Texas during Roland's 20-year military career. Settling in Lytle, Texas, they built a home next to Alice's parents in 1961, when Roland was assigned to the U.S.S. Boxer in the Caribbean Sea.

Alice was also preceded in death by her siblings: Elizabeth H. Rocha, Elias Hernandez, Sarah H. Giunta, Pedro Hernandez, Jr., Marie H. Rangel, and Concepción Hernandez.

Throughout her LVN career, she worked at the San Antonio Baptist Memorial Hospital in Labor and Delivery, San Antonio State Hospital, and various nursing homes in California and Hawaii as she accompanied Roland to his USMC duty stations. In 1970, Alice began commuting with her son Roy Galindo to the Cerebral Palsy Center, a school tailored to his needs. She worked nearby at Bexar County Medical Center (present-day University Health System) in a Hospital School administered by Northside Independent School District (NISD). Later, she worked at Charter Real Hospital with emotionally disturbed students, also through NISD, where she retired after 20 years of service.

In her retirement, which she said was to "take care of Roy at home", she travelled the 30-minute drive into San Antonio, often stopping to pick up her niece, Sandy Rangel, to enjoy Sea World, the Mall, the park or visiting relatives. She was a dedicated caregiver for her son Roy, who had cerebral palsy since his birth, until her memory loss limited her ability as a caregiver and it became clear she needed to rest from her lifelong dedication. In the last year we would still find her leaning over his bed to stroke his hair and kiss him, or offer him a bite of food she was eating.

Alice was a recent transplant to Austin, along with her son Roy, coming to live with daughter and son-in-law Cindy and Rick Henderson in 2010. In the years that followed, she enjoyed walking in the Brentwood neighborhood; receiving manicures and pedicures with the most loving care from her "adopted " son Ken at Mystic Nails; accompanying Roy and Cindy on Saturday errands and to Hyde Park Baptist Church for Sunday School and Church Services; watching children play in Brentwood Park; attending Early Memory Loss day programs at Mike's Place, Congregation Beth Israel, YMCA Town Lake, Westlake Hills Presbyterian Church and Elderhaven Adult Day Program at AGE of Central Texas. Her Hyde Park Baptist Church Family was the highlight of her weeks as she followed Roy to their special northwest corner during the 11:00 service, greeting all their friends in the balcony with a smile and squeezing their hand.

In the last 7 months as her dementia and care needs progressed, she blessed the staff and residents at Retirement and Nursing Center on Burnet Lane. She had a wonderful smile that radiated love, acceptance, and gratitude wherever she went. Alice was blessed to have many caregivers (Angels) whom she adopted as family. We would like to thank those who assisted Mom in her Austin home, especially Kayla Habbit, Peggy Pharr, LaTasha Ochiltree, Caroline Shutz, Brandy Galbert, and the many caring CNA's and Nurses at the Retirement and Nursing Center. They were all "so beautiful" to her. We are grateful for all who helped enrich Mom's life and made her smile.

She was a devoted mother and is survived by her children: Cindy Henderson (and Rick Henderson of Austin), Gilbert R. Galindo, Jr. (and Amy Barela of Lytle), Roy Galindo (and Chrissy Delp of Austin), Mary Jo Galindo (and Julie Lee of Austin), James E. Galindo (and Carla Galindo of McAllen), and Peter R. Galindo (and Renata Galindo of San Antonio).

Grammy adored her grandchildren: Brandy Andreatos (and James Andreatos of Houston), Lauren Henderson (and Lewis Brown of Oakland, CA), Natalie E. Galindo (and Annalia Medina of San Antonio), Jacob A. Galindo of McAllen, Mitchell Barela of San Antonio, and Wesley Fergus of Wisconsin. Her precious great-grandchildren are Costa, Cannon, and Georgia Andreatos; Ethan, Arianne, and Emily Barela, and Alivia Fergus. Tía Frances is also survived by many loving cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Alice spread unconditional love and kindness in her wake, and Heaven undoubtedly got a bit brighter upon her arrival. We will continue to rejoice in her Heavenly freedom from the earthly trials of her journey and attempt to model her lessons in Love.

She will be buried with her parents at La Orden Caballeros de America Cemetery in San Antonio. Memorial services to celebrate her life are planned for Austin at Christ Chapel in Hyde Park Baptist Church, 3901 Speedway 78751), and at the First Baptist Church, 18627 N. Prairie St., Lytle, Texas 78052). After the Lytle service, family and friends are invited to Gil and Amy's ("Mom's home at the Ranch"), 16470 S FM 2790 W, 2.2 miles north of Lytle for a BBQ in Alice's honor.
