Mr. Funkhouser was born June 27, 1930, in McGaheysville, and was the son of the late Charles Vernon and Ruth Alexander Funkhouser.
Mr. Funkhouser graduated from McGaheysville High School and had a Bachelor of Art Degree from Bridgewater College and did post graduate work at Madison College, now James Madison University. He served in the U.S. Air Force in Japan and Korea from 1952 to 1956. He was also a lifetime member of the McGaheysville United Methodist Church. He retired from Merck & Company after 15 years and was a self-employed farmer with a beef, cow/calf operation.
On June 7, 1952, he married Ellen Patterson, who survives. Also surviving are three sons, Vernon Funkhouser and wife, Jeannette, of Warrenton, Charles Funkhouser and wife, Karen, of Old Saybrook, Conn., Steven Funkhouser and wife, Rachel, McGaheysville, and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Cynthia Sue Funkhouser, one son, Robert A. "Robbie" Funkhouser Jr., two granddaughters, a brother, Charles A. Funkhouser.
A funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 11, 2007, at the McGaheysville United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the Mount Olivet Cemetery in McGaheysville.
The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the McGaheysville United Methodist Church, or the Elkton Rescue Squad.
