Joseph Donovan was the seventh of eight children born to Irish immigrants. He spent all his life in Fall River, working as a maintenance man and factory worker, and, in his youth, as a purser for the Fall River Line. He had four children: Carol King, deceased, of North Carolina; Maurice, deceased, of Fall River; Kathe Ferreira, of Somerset; and Gail Custadio of Dartmouth.
