Oliver Dawson was born James Oliver Dawson on August 5, 1834 in Frankfort, Kentucky to Mary Ann Mosby and Richard Dawson.

After his mother died when he was between three and four years old, his father moved the family to Hancock County, becoming one of the earliest settlers of the county. He was about 11 years old when his father passed away in 1845. Oliver was adopted into the family of William Painter, where he grew to manhood.

The greater part of his life was spent near La Harpe on his farm where he lived along with his wife, Lacy Ann Boyer, whom he married on February 2, 1862, and their two children, Mary Eva (born 1863) and Lemoine Painter Dawson (born 1867).

Around 1905, he and Lacy moved into the city of La Harpe where he resided until his death on June 11, 1912.

He was survived by his wife, daughter Eva Todd of La Harpe, son Lemoine P. Dawson of Idaho Falls, Idaho, and 11 grandchildren. One granddaughter preceded him in death.
