Mrs. Frances Gray Cannon, a lifelong resident of Durham County, died Monday, December 11, 2017 at The Stratford Assisted Living in Chapel Hill.

Mrs. Cannon was born in Orange County on September 29, 1923 to Robert Neese Gray & Geneva Crabtree Gray. She was married on November 2, 1945 to Eldred C "Buster" Cannon who predeceased her on December 30th, 1996. In addition to her parents & husband, Mrs. Cannon was predeceased by her brothers & sisters, Clarence Gray, Thomas Gray, Lena Browning, Mary Wilkerson & Essie Allen.

Mrs. Cannon was a graduate of Hillsborough High School with the class of 1940 & also a graduate of Croft's Secretarial School. She was secretary to the late Claude V. Jones, then City Attorney for 16 years, & was secretary at Immanuel Baptist Church for 28 years where she was a member.

Mrs. Cannon was the last surviving member of the original 17 charter members when Immanuel Baptist Church was organized in 1942. She was active in many organizations of the church & held the position of Church Clerk for many years.

Surviving are her daughter, Nancy Cannon Brinitzer & husband, Ben of Charlotte; granddaughter, Courtney Gray Kirk & husband, Chris; great-grandson, Jackson Cannon Kirk- great-granddaughter, Collins Gray Kirk, all of Atlanta, GA; as well as a number of nieces & nephews.

Visitation will be at Clements Funeral Home in Durham on Thursday, December 14th from 6pm-8pm. Funeral services will be held at Clements Funeral Chapel on Friday December 15th at 11 o'clock with burial in Brier Creek Memorial Gardens. Rev. Sandra Browning McKeown & Chaplain Donnie Addison will officiate.
