April 7, 1933 – April 11, 2016
Gay was born in Fresno, CA, to Saul and Lola Gregory and grew up on a small farm near Selma. She attended Franklin Elementary School and Selma High School, class of 1951. On Labor Day weekend in 1950, Gay attended a Methodist Youth Regional Retreat at Lake Sequoia. She prayed God would arrange for her to meet a young Christian man and, in her words, “God did show me a wonderful young man.” Bob and Gay were married on April 11, 1952, and after a brief stay in Fresno, they settled in Bakersfield where they raised their family.
Gay was actively involved at First Christian Church (now Mill Creek Christian) serving the Lord and her church family in many ways. Gay worked for Kern County Supt. of Schools and Panama-Buena Vista School District and will be missed by her many friends from each.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Saul and Lola Gregory; brother, John Gregory; and an infant son. She is survived by her husband, Bob; sons, Rick (Linda) Smith, Greg (Stephanie) Smith, and Tim (Barbara) Smith; grandchildren, Mike (Rachel), Cameron (Katy), Mallory, Lindsay (Jacob), and Jessica; great-grandchildren, Gracie, Cayelyn, Ethan, Autumn, and Tyler; and numerous nieces and nephews. Gay will be truly missed by all who knew and loved her and affectionately referred to her as “The Queen.”
A memorial service will be held on April 20 at 11:00 a.m. at Mill Creek Christian Church, 1660 “S” Street. A reception will follow at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Mill Creek Christian Church Memorial Fund.
