SMITH, NAVERNIA CARTER - 12th child of 13, born to the late Sidney E. and Laura Bell Carter, on May 16, 1930, slipped quietly away, to rest until Jesus returns, early Tuesday morning October 7, 2003 at St. Mary's Hospital. Navernia was born and reared in Knoxville. She attended Austin High School, class of 1949. She was a member of Mount Olive Baptist Church. She married Samuel J. Smith in 1948, and to this union 8 children were born. She & Samuel relocated to New York in 1951 where they remained until returning to Knoxville in 1993. She is preceded in death by her parents, Sidney E. and Laura Bell Carter sons, Samuel, Sidney, Ward and Gregory. She leaves to mourn her passing: her loving and devoted husband, Samuel J. Smith, Sr. loving daughters, Gwendolyn (Roger) Baylock & Karen Loftin sons, Ronald (Louise) Smith, Hempstead, NY, Donnell (Raquell) Smith dear sisters, Louis Wright, Ara Sharp sisters in law, Edna Carter, Mansfield, Ohio and Celeste Jemerson, Freeport, New York ten grandchildren, Christopher, Jessica, Electa, Bryant, Leslie, Lucaya, Danielle, David, Lisa, Donnell, Jr. eight great grandchildren, Ebonee', Tiara, Jalen, Monty, Jazmine, Anthony, Hanan, Jabari and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. The family wishes to thank the staff of St. Mary's Hospital's CCU, COU, and Select Units and the staff at the North Knoxville Dialysis Center for the wonderful care and services extended. Family and friends will meet for visitation, Friday from 1-2 p.m. at College Hill Seventh-Day Adventist Church. Funeral services will begin at 2 p.m. Interment Highland Memorial Cemetery (Sutherland Ave.) Arrangements by Jarnigan & Son Mortuary.
