A celebration of life for Richard Edward Cartwright, 84, of Gainesville, was Saturday, April 16, 2016 at the Geo. J. Carroll & Son Funeral Home.

Richard was born February 20, 1932 on the Cartwright Ranch, Gainesville, TX, to Laura Thelma Cunningham Cartwright and Grover Cleveland Cartwright. He passed away on April 11, 2016.

He graduated from Gainesville High School in 1950, where he was a star running back in football. He was a graduate of Texas Tech in 1954 with a degree in Agriculture. Richard managed the Cartwright Ranch.

Richard served on the board of the Chamber of Commerce for 2 years and on the board of Cooke County Community College (North Texas Community College) from 1978-1984.

Richard was a member of the Texas Forestry Association, and was named Tree Farmer of the Year for his management of the L. Cartwright Production Company land in Jasper County, TX, which has been in the family since 1840. The property produces timber, spring water and oil and gas. He was currently a managing partner of the family company, and had been for many years.

He married Esther Jeanne Tudor, the love of his life on September 4, 1953 who survives.

Also surviving are Richard’s and Jeanne’s children; Jo Lynn Cartwright of Dallas; Paula Sue Cartwright of Colorado Springs; Richard Bryan Cartwright (wife Becky) of Jasper; Lon Brady Cartwright of Dallas. Also surviving are his grandsons Benjamin C. Mullen (fiancée Stacy) of Highlands Ranch, CO, and Richard Brady Cartwright (wife Katie) of Dallas; and his loving black lab, Watson.

No one loved their family more than Richard did. He was charming, funny and loved to tell stories, sometimes several times!

Richard measured his wealth by the multitude of friends he accumulated over 84 years and in the success of his children.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to: Frank Buck Zoo; the American Heart Association or the charity of choice.
