Victor J. Basta Sr., 79, Martin Marietta estimator

Victor Joseph Basta Sr., a retired cost estimator for Martin Marietta Corp. and a D-Day veteran of World War II, died of complications from muscular dystrophy July 1 at his Bel Air home. He was 79.
Born in Philadelphia and raised in Waverly, he attended St. Ann Parochial School and the old Thomas A. Edison Vocational School in downtown Baltimore.
Mr. Basta's work as a carpenter and machinist at the old Glenn L. Martin Co. was interrupted by his service in the Army Corps of Engineers during World War II. He landed in Normandy on June 6, 1944, during the Allied invasion of France.
He subsequently rejoined what became Martin Marietta and retired in 1970 as a senior estimator in its finance department.
He was a past president of the Essex Improvement Association and belonged to the Catholic War Veterans, the Knights of Columbus and the Holy Name Society.
He enjoyed woodworking and made Uncle Sam figures for garden and lawn display. Family members sold his work at the Bel Air Farmers' Market.
A funeral Mass was offered Monday at St. Ignatius Roman Catholic Church in Hickory, where he was a member.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, the former Christine M. Zavadil; two sons, Victor J. Basta Jr. of Parkton and Henry Michael Basta of Abingdon; two daughters, Donna Marie Gaines of Fallston and Christine Monica Johnson of St. Michaels; three brothers, Frank Basta of White Marsh, Michael Basta of Hanover, Pa., and John Basta of Glen Rock, Pa.; and six grandchildren.
