Manuel Valdivia
September 13, 1929 – February 29, 2016

Our beloved father and friend Manuel Valdivia passed away on February 29, 2016, of natural causes in his home.

Manuel, who lived to be 86 years old, enjoyed dancing, socializing with friends, and loved being a part of his growing family and grandchildren.

Manuel was born and raised in Mojave, California, to Alberto and Bruna Valdivia and was the youngest of seven children. He went to Antelope Valley High School and then enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1948 to 1952 and then joined the Marine Corps Reserves from 1952 to 1956. Manuel achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant and was honorably discharged after his service to our country. A young Manuel then went to San Francisco after his military service with some of his military buddies and started working as an electronic technician. Manuel had an aptitude for electronics and was always ordering the latest electronic kits that he would put together in his room to see how things worked, as he loved to be challenged.

While in San Francisco, Manuel met Christel Anne Bunter at a church dance. She was studying to become a registered nurse. They soon fell in love and were married in Vallejo on June 7, 1958. Along the way, they had four beloved sons (Christopher, Nicholas, Joseph, and Anthony) that they raised as they moved from Sacramento to Southern California for their careers, eventually moving the family back to the Mojave area.

In the early ‘70s, Manuel then joined the post office in Mojave as an electronic technician, where he raised his children and eventually retired in 1986 from the U.S. Post Office.

Manuel is survived by his first wife, Christel Anne (Bunter) Adams, and their loving children: Christopher Valdivia; his daughter-in-law, Beverlee June (Ackerson) Valdivia; his first wife, Gail Sue (Hyneman) Mergelli; and their children, John Valdivia and Jefferey Valdivia and James Valdivia, and their grandchildren. His second son, Nicholas Valdivia; his daughter-in-law, Maria Geri (Dewilde) Valdivia; and their children, Mariah Valdivia and Hannah Valdivia and Emily Valdivia. His third son, Joseph Valdivia; his daughter-in-law, Shirley (Sharpe) Valdivia; and their children, Aaron Valdivia, Evan Valdivia, and Bryce Valdivia. His last son, Anthony Steven Valdivia; his daughter-in-law, Traci Lynn (Hooge) Valdivia; and their children, Anthony Valdivia and Victoria Valdivia. Manuel is also survived by his sisters, Alajandra (Valdivia) Cook and Marcus (Valdivia) Lagasse, and their children and grandchildren.

Manuel was preceded by his father, Alberto Valdivia; mother, Bruna Valdivia; brothers, Domingo Valdivia and Francisco Valdivia; and sisters, Josephine Valdivia and Tomasa Valdivia and their children and grandchildren.

The funeral services for Manuel will be held at Greenlawn Funeral Home & Cemeteries, which is located at 3700 River Blvd., in the NORTHEAST part of Bakersfield, CA 93305. Services for Manuel will be on Saturday, March 12th, and will start with an open casket viewing from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., with a graveside service following thereafter at 2 p.m. at the cemetery.

Manuel's family would like to thank San Joaquin Community Hospital and Dr. Desai for their constant support when Manuel was in their hospital care and all the members from Optimal Hospice who came out to provide guidance and moral support to Manuel and his family, giving him the compassion and dignity for his journey to his next life.

We especially want to thank his longtime companion, Bessie Carlton, for her constant loving support to Manuel in this trying time, and Traci Valdivia, who provided many thankless hours of her time during his constant hospice care. Together they made Manuel feel very comfortable.
