Patrick K. McDaniel was born August 24, 1939 in Summerville, Oregon to Cyrus T. McDaniel and Nellie S. Austin McDaniel. He joined a blended family consisting of Denny, Virginia, Victor, Marvel, Aileen, Lindsey, Vivian, Shannon, Gale and Shirley. His father was critically injured in a farming accident 6 months after Pat was born, which left his mother Nellie to raise all the children alone. Pat so adored his mother and she was a standard by which he measured so much in his life.

Pat attended school in Imbler, OR and graduated in 1958 from Imbler High School. He excelled in sports, loving basketball and football. After high school, Pat graduated from Oregon Technical Institute of Technology in Drafting Technology. He married his high school sweetheart, Rosalee Tuck. Together they had three beautiful children, Tracie, Douglas and Michelle.

Pat graduated from Oregon State University, with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He went on to become a licensed professional engineer in Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Alaska. He worked for Key Technology, Westinghouse Hanford and Battelle NW Labs.

In 1975 he founded Mid-Columbia Engineering, a mechanical engineering firm and technical services company, which provided services to power plants throughout the U.S. In 1976 he co-founded G&M Machine, a precision machine shop and Mid-Columbia Construction, an underground water and sewer company.

In 1985 he married the love of his life, Sharon. Together they blazed many trails, she supporting him in the growth of the engineering and technical services, along with the companies he continued to create, which provided a wide range of services from computer aided design, software and GPS development, research and development of products for nuclear waste management, food container integrity, automotive after-market products, modular housing solutions and hydro-power generation.

Pat was known for his love of developing a solution for most anything. His enthusiasm was contagious. He was an entrepreneur, inventor, problem solver and inspiration to countless people. He was a hard driver and never gave up on anything. The people that worked with him loved him and he cared about each of them. His career assisted organizations to design and develop industry specific equipment. He held 11 patents in the nuclear, food container and automotive after-market industry.

Pat’s greatest pride & achievement was the development of a hydro-electric power production facility on the Columbia River. He had great vision and could see things and possibilities the rest of us would overlook.

Pat was truly gifted and lived his life with great intensity. He was not all about work. His love for family, hunting and innovative design was paramount. Our family has such great memories of the annual 4th of July gathering with family and friends in the Blue Mountains near the Tucannon River, something Pat was the great organizer of and the rest of us couldn’t wait to attend. Pat & Sharon enjoyed many travels to many places and truly enjoyed their time and adventures in Mexico, for so many years. Any time spent with Pat was truly special.

Pat passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, March 26, 2016, moments before Easter. His family loved him so much. He was a great father, grand-father and great-grand-father. He was devoted, loving and kind, not only to those he loved, but to those where he saw a need. He was larger than life and will be greatly missed.

Pat is survived by his beloved wife Sharon of Pasco, WA. His daughter Tracie (Eric) Straalsund of Richland, grand-children, Erin (Chris) Anderson, Dana Straalsund and Kyle Straalsund. Son Douglas (Julie) of Issaquah, grand-children Chelsey, Haley & Jamie and Michelle Johnson of Richland, grand-daughter Taylor and great grand-children, Declan & Rada Anderson. Sister Shirley Bolin (Gene) of LaGrande, OR and Aileen Williams of Forest Grove, OR, sisters-in-law Dixie McDaniel and Loretta McDaniel; along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Pat was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Tyrone, Victor, Lindsey, Denny, Gale and Shannon; and by his sisters Virginia, Marvel, Vivian; and a nephew, Mark Bolin.

As Pat said good-bye to his earthly home, he held his grand-daughter Katy Straalsund in his loving arms and they both crossed the bridge together to their heavenly home.

The family thanks the loving care of Hospice, our wonderful neighbors, friends, family, adopted family, spiritual friends and health care professionals who supported us so much.
