The 1900 census in Pike County shows Sarah born September 1840, age 59, widowed, 10 children born and 5 living.

Regarding Sarah's middle name: There appears to have been several Sarah Mortons in Pike County which included Sarah E., Sarah Ann, Sarah Agnes and Sarah Alice. All these names show up in Pike County newspapers as part of land transactions to various parties. Sarah Alice Morton was married in 1903 and conducted several land transactions with the Lynch family and was still alive in 1907, which rules her out. The marriage affidavit for son Washington states his mother's name was Sarah E. Elder.

[This Sarah is not to be confused to the Sarah Ann Deadman born 1836 who married Thomas Dedman in Pike County. This family shows up on the 1860 census as Sarah being 24 years old and a child named Viola age 12 living with them. That Thomas Dedman died in 1863 during the Civil War and Sarah Ann filed for a widow's pension in 1866, and a minor's pension in 1872.]
