Published in the Daily Herald (Arlington Heights, IL) on Apr. 5, 2016:

Patricia Thiel Brennan died peacefully on Mar. 20, 2016, at her residence. She was born on Jan. 14, 1935 in Evanston, Ill., the daughter of the late Ernest Aloysius and Dorothy (Baine) Thiel. She lived in LaGrange Park, Ill. for most of her school years, and attended Nazareth Academy High School in LaGrange. After graduating from the University of Illinois with a degree in elementary education, Pat taught second grade at Brookfield Elementary in Brookfield, Ill.

She then began her most challenging, but unpaid and tenured career of teaching her children, Thomas Brennan, Jeanine Brennan (Tom Hegg), Kathleen Brennan, Daniel Brennan (Mary), and Amy Brennan, a job at which she excelled. Pat is survived by nine grandchildren, who didn't have Grammy as a teacher for nearly long enough: Ryan Brennan, Riley Edmunds, Elliot Edmunds, Brigid Brennan, Sam Hegg, Kyle Brennan, Megan Brennan, Emily Edmunds, and Clare Brennan.

Pat identified environmental issues and championed conservation well ahead of her time. She was also passionate about health advocacy, and tirelessly researched health issues for herself and others, often surprising, sometimes enlightening, and always impressing, her medical professionals. Through hard work and discipline, she was able to enjoy 15 quality years of life after a Stage 4 lung cancer diagnosis -- a remarkable feat. Although she avoided sugar for years (because cancer feeds on sugar), Pat thoroughly enjoyed a lot of ice cream in her final days. She would be pleased to know that anyone who reads this now knows that cancer feeds on sugar.

Pat greatly enjoyed her dear friends and her home for the past five years at Lake Forest Place.

Previously married to Eugene F. Brennan, Jr. (deceased), she also lived in Santa Fe, N.M., Atlanta, Ga., and Glen Ellyn, Ill., where she raised her family.

She is survived by four sisters: Catherine Quigg of Arlington Heights, Ill., Barbara Keoughan of Skillman, N.J., Dorothy Lafeber and Virginia Thiel of Hendersonville, N.C.; and a brother, Ernest Thiel, Jr. of Salida, Colo.

Relatives and friends are respectively invited to attend a Memorial Mass on Apr. 6, 2016, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Patrick's Church (in the little church) at 991 S. Waukegan Rd. in Lake Forest, Ill., with Father Larry Dunn as Celebrant. Visitation will be at 9:30 a.m., also at St. Patrick's, prior to the Mass. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Cancer Wellness Center and Good Days (formerly known as the Chronic Disease Fund).
