US NAVY - WORLT WAR II

BANGOR - Galen S. Hopkins, 89, died March 31, 2016, at a Bangor hospital. He was born Dec. 4, 1926, in Bangor, the son of Carleton L. and Marie (Jordan) Hopkins.


Galen left school at an early age, joined the Navy where he served from 1944-1946. He met his wife of 64 years, Pauline (Haskins) while they both worked at JH Fleming Tire Co. Galen was then employed by New England Telephone Company until he retired in 1986. He became a member of the prestigious National Safety Council's Million mile club while driving for the phone company.


In addition to his wife, Pauline, Galen is survived by his four children, Mary Ellen Sites and Harold Hopkins, both of Bangor, Robin Fitzherbert and husband, Terry, of Eliot, and Nancy Howe and her husband, Mike, and children, Julia and Andy of Dedham. He is also survived by his brother, Richard Hopkins and his sister, Rosemary Parks.


He was predeceased by his infant son, Robert Joseph; twelve siblings, Edward, killed in WWII, Reginald, Carleton, John, Winnie Bigelow, Helen Crocker, Marie Harris, Dorothy Cameron, Patricia Durham, Jeanette Hunt, Lucille and Catherine Hopkins.


The Rite of Committal will be at Mt. Pleasant Catholic Cemetery will be held at a later date. (Brookings-Smith Funeral Home and Bangor Daily News 4/4/2016)
