Vernon was born in Talbot County on March 26, 1922. He was the son of Clarence D. and Leona White Chance. Vernon served his country in the Army from 1943 to 1947. He was a farmer, gas station proprietor, caretaker of Talisman Farms in Grasonville and retired from the maintenance department at BWI Airport. After retiring, he kept a huge garden with the best pole beans around. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing cards with friends and relatives.
In 1945, he married Jean Blades from Bethlehem, who preceded him in death on Sept. 7, 2014 (one day before their 69th wedding anniversary). Vernon and Jean were blessed with four children: son Vernon Jr., who died in 1982, daughter Donna and husband Mike Connell of Ridgely, son Wayne and wife Susan of Preston, and daughter Debby and husband Curtis Meissner of Bostic, N.C. Vernon leaves three grandchildren, Jenny, Andrew and Erin. He is also survived by sister, Mildred Dulin of Worton, Md., along with many nieces and nephews.
Vernon was preceded in death by sisters Dorothy, Louise and Elsie, and brothers, Charles, Lester, Earl and Floyd.
A celebration of life will be held Saturday, Jan. 17, 2 p.m. at Fish Locker Ministries, 201 Sunset Blvd., Ridgely, Md.
