Thomas J. Niland, 75, of 31 Delaware Avenue, died late Monday night in Allegany Hospital where he was admitted Saturday. He had been in failing health 18 months as the result of a hip injury. A pioneer workman on the Western Maryland Railway and West Virginia Central, Mr. Niland was a retired railroad machinist and a member of the International Association of Machinists. Born in Terra Alta, W Va,, he had resided in Cumberland most of his life and held membership in St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the Holy Name Society of the parish. His parents were the late Dennis and Ellen Dorsey Niland. Mr. Niland leaves his widow, the former Miss Clara A. Clarke; three sons, James E.. Philip C. and Leo F. Niland, and a daughter, Mrs. E. Veronica Burkalew, all of this city. The body is at the Scarpelli Funeral Home. A sister, Mrs. Cecelia Fishburn, Washington, D. C. and ten grandchildren also survive. A funeral service will be held Friday at 9 a. in. in St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Interment will be in St. Patrick’s Cemetery.
