William Fred Barr of Clinton died Friday, May 28th at the age of 90. Services will be held at the United Methodist Church in Clinton on Wednesday, June 2 at 2 P.M.

Fred was born August 8th, 1913 near Putnam Oklahoma in Dewey County, the son of William and Mildred Adam Barr. Fred was preceded in death by three brothers: Ray, Roy and Ted Barr; and four sisters: Orah Springer, Esta Mohr, Doris Borneman and Margaret Holland.

His son and wife: Gary & Norma Barr; five grandchildren: Justin, Mary, Leslie, Susannah & Stephanie; two great grandchildren: Jonathan & Alicia; and one sister: Bertha Smythe survive him.

His first two years of education were at a one room school northwest of Putnam called Oak Valley School. From the third grade through high school he attended school at Putnam graduating in April 1933.

He joined the Christian Church at Putnam in 1930. He later joined the First Methodist Church of Clinton. In January of 1935 he enrolled in Southwestern State Teachers College of Weatherford, Oklahoma. He graduated in 1938 with a BS degree with majors in business, government and history. He was the first from his family to graduate from college.

On December 27th, 1937 he married Georgiana Denney in Clinton, Oklahoma. They celebrated their 60th anniversary in 1997. In 1938 and 1939 he taught school at Custer City. For the next two years he worked at the Production Credit offices in Clinton and Chickasha. In the fall of 1940 he began teaching 7th and 8th grade at Independence School. He remained in the position for one year when he was promoted to Superintendent. He remained at Independence until the summer of 1953 when he helped consolidate the school with Custer City. During this time he attended summer school at Oklahoma University and earned his Masters Degree in school administration in 1950.

In April of 1944 he joined the Masonic Lodge #258 of Custer. In 1956 he received his 32nd degree in the Masonic Lodge. In September of 1953 he became the Principal of Hooker High School. He was promoted to Superintendent in 1954 where he remained for 5 years. During this time he served as the President of the Panhandle Teachers Association in 1958 and was a member of the Oklahoma Textbook Committee.

In 1959 he moved to Boise City, Oklahoma and became the high school principal. Also during this time he began to sell life insurance. In July of 1961 he moved back to Clinton, Oklahoma where he was made District Manager for the National Investors Life Insurance Company.

In 1964 he returned to teaching becoming the principal of Watonga High School where he remained until 1967. He ended his teaching career of 30 years with three years at Burns Flat. During his retirement he farmed and raised Herefords. All who knew him and all the young people he helped educate will miss him.
