Louis aka Lewis Hartshorn was born into slavery circa 1816 in Virginia possibly in Alexandria. His wife was Margaret Hartshorn also born into slavery in Virginia. After buying their freedom in circa 1860 they moved to Buchanan County Missouri near St. Joseph Missouri, where they raised a family of twelve children., and died in this state.
