Fred "Art" Washington died peacefully on July 8, 2014, surrounded by family and comforted by friends and family around the world.
Fred was born June 24, 1924 in Dunkirk, NY, son of the late Frederick Albert and Pearl Jane Siggins Washington. He joined the Marine Corps after graduation from Dunkirk High School in 1942 and served honorably as a munitions specialist in the South Pacific during WWII. He remained a proud Marine all of his life.
Fred is survived by Elinor Griffith Washington, his loving wife of 67 years; his daughters Norie S nchez (Enrique), Cynthia Riggle, Nancy Wickmark (Steven) and Janice Ulrich (Keith); nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; "adopted" daughters Sivika Punyashthiti of Bangkok and Dang Bach Tuyet of Toronto; and two siblings, Rebecca Kugler Dlouhy and Bruce (Debbie) Washington.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and siblings Ruth Pugh, June Newell, and Ward E. Washington.
Fred was a Stone Mason/ Bricklayer whose work can be seen throughout Western New York and Corrientes, Argentina. He retired from Habiterra Associates architectural firm as a construction supervisor. After 58 years in Cassadaga, NY and 15 winters in North Myrtle Beach, SC, Fred and Elinor moved to Indian Trail in 2004.
Fred enjoyed hunting, fishing and golf but his true passions were his family (which extended to nearly everyone he met) music, cooking and sharing good food. He taught himself to play all of the brass instruments and delighted in playing in many bands and church ensembles. He loved singing (especially old hymns) and was a valued choir member in any church he attended. In his final hours he was singing along with friends and family.
Fred and Elinor spread joy to others by creating 42 "thinking of you" quilts for family, friends and strangers. Fred loved etching plates as gifts, creating intricate pysanky dyed eggs, and growing a variety of flowers to share with his wife.
Fred's life will be celebrated at Mill Grove UMC, 7311 Mill Grove Rd., Indian Trail, NC on Saturday, July 12, 2014, with visitation beginning at 10:00, followed by the Service of Celebration at 11:30. Streaming video will be available for the service at www.millgrove.org.
