Married Catherine Glanville on 27 June 1898 at Fowey, in St Austell, Cornwall. He was a mariner, his father a farmer and Catherine's father, Thomas was a coachman.
In the 1911 UK Census, they lived at 27 Bridge Street, St Blazey, Cornwall with their children, Jessie [11], Eliza Ann [6], Gladys [4] & William John Sydney [1] and in 1901 with his mother-in-law, Elizabeth Glanville [74]. He was a Mercantile sailor.

Prior to WW1 had served 11 years in the Royal Navy Reserve.

On 4 September 1915 William, wih the 24th Battalion went ashore at Gallipoli. They spent the next 16 weeks sharing duty in the Lone Pine trenches with the 23rd Battalion.

William was wounded b/w 27 & 31/7/1916 while serving with the 24th Battalion in France. After recovering from his wounds, gun shot to the head (mild), he was transfered to the Australian Army Ordnance Corps 27/7/1917.

In 1921 they lived in Scott St, White Hills, he was a toolsmith.
