On August 22, 1855, Martha "Mattie" Bell Browning was born in Henry County, Kentucky to John McClanahan-Strother and Octavia Kennedy Browning. Family records state Mattie was the youngest of 14 children but do not identify the names of her siblings. I have only been able to positively identify ten siblings, Eli, Sarah, Lucy H., William, Julia, Mary Margaret, George Thomas, John F., Charles Oscar, and Octavia.

On November 16, 1880, Mattie married William Ambrose Massie and they moved into the house in which she was raised. Mattie's mother, Octavia, had passed away the month before. Mattie was still in mourning and wore a black dress for her wedding.

Mattie and William had six children, Anna Jeanette, Jessie Duvau, Lula Elizabeth, William Herman, Edward Kennedy, and Laura Jeanette, all of whom were raised in the same home. William, Mattie, and their children moved to Texas in 1906, first to Armstrong County then in 1913 to Friona in Parmer County.

Mattie passed away July 22, 1943, a month before her 88th birthday, and is buried in the Massie plot of the Friona Cemetery.
