Margaret Billingsley was born in Horatio, Arkansas. She graduated from Horatio High School in 1936. She was crowned
Rodeo Queen for the State of Arkansas in 1941 and attended Magnolia A & M College, Magnolia, Arkansas and Henderson State Teachers College in Arkadelphia, Arkansas.

Miss Margaret met the love of her life when she met A.P Merritt during his travel from Kilgore to Billingsley Corner, Arkansas on a quail hunting trip. Margaret fried quail in an open fireplace for A.P. and won his heart with her excellent cooking skills and her beauty. They were married on Christmas day in 1942. As a family tradition Mrs Merritt fried quail for her children and grandchildren for Christmas Day each year.

She and A.P. Sr. held a healthy competition when it came to sporting events, such as betting on horse racing, deer hunting and fishing. Even though A.P. provided her with the slowest boat she would always catch more fish.
She also enjoyed researching family geneology, gambling, spending time with her family and friends and living life to its fullest.
She was a long time member of the First Baptist Church of Kilgore, Tx. Margaret belonged to several civic, state and national organizations. As her children were growing up, she served as president of the Kilgore P.T.A. and was a cub scout den mother. Margaret instilled in her children to be good stewards of Gods blessings and to give back to their communities.
Margaret was a leader in business and she was active in several businesses. She was most proud of her contractors supply company, Arrowhead Contractors Inc. until she sold it in 2013. She was instrumental in assisting her husband with his business, Merritt Tool Company, Kilgore, Tx.
