Gary Lawrence Sloan, 69, Overland Park, Kan., passed away June 28, 2014, at his home after suffering a heart attack.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 2, at the Johnson County Chapel, 11200 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, KS 66210. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, July 3, at Christ Lutheran Church, 11720 Nieman Rd., Overland Park, KS 66210. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Gary Sloan Memorial Scholarship Fund, at UMKC School of Law Foundation, UMKC School of Law, 1-200 Law School, Kansas City, MO 64110 or Christ Lutheran Church.

Gary was born Feb. 20, 1945, in Houston, Texas. He spent his childhood in Milwaukee, Wis., until his family moved to Kansas City, where he attended Rockhurst High School and Center High School. He received his undergraduate degree and law degrees, JD and Master of Laws, from UMKC. Gary served in the U.S. Army as a signal corps officer and First Lieutenant in Vietnam. While in the service he was a Sports Information Officer in Saigon.

Gary was a legend in the Kansas City softball community and well-known in softball circles throughout the country. He hit a home run out of the Royals Stadium in 1980 in a Home Run hitting contest. He continued to play competitive senior softball until his passing. He was passionate about education and the written word. He lived by softball, Blues, and beer. He was a husband, father, grandfather, brother, friend and prodigious mentor. He was loved by many and will be wholeheartedly missed.

Gary was preceded in death by his father, Norman J. Sloan.

Survivors include his wife, Anna; children, Kelly, Bryan, Michelle and Julie; grandchildren, Jordan, Taylor and Parker; mother, Elizabeth; and siblings, Bruce, Norma, Jill and Jan.
