Her first husband Dr. George Richard Hartz predeceased her and she remarried 25 years ago. She was the mother of two sons and three stepsons. Joan also had eight grandchildren.
Joan graduated from Lancaster High School. She worked as a medical technologist after earning a degree from Lebanon Valley College. Joan was an avid golfer. She also enjoyed gardening, quilting, knitting, reading, playing bridge, doing cryptograms, and watching wildlife. She raised Labrador retrievers when she was younger.
Joan was a member of the Lebanon Country Club and the Lititz Women’s Club. She was a member at Highland Presbyterian Church for fifty years, and previously served as Deacon.
Her sister Virginia Gilbert Mattson served in the United States Navy during World War II.
Funeral service was held Thursday, March 24, 2016 at 11 a.m. at the Charles F. Snyder, Jr. Funeral Home, 3110 Lititz Pike, Lititz (across from Brethren Village Retirement Community). Interment will be private.
