The funeral of Alice Matthews yesterday afternoon was a powerful public demonstration of the intense feeling which the murder of the girl has aroused, not only in the neighborhood of her home, but all over the city.
Although the family had made special request that only relatives and the most intimate friends attend, there were fully a thousand persons standing on the bank before the door, in the deep mud of the ungraded street and on the banks across the street when eight girl friends carried the casket forth. And at Layman’s cemetery, half a mile away, an even greater throng gathered about the grave to see the casket lowered.

By early October of 1915, no person had yet to be found for the murder of Alice. Although several men were brought in for questioning all were proven to be innocent of the crime. Except for one man, Alfred Driskell - killer or just insane?
October 23, 1915 in part:
County Attorney John M. Reese said yesterday he would issue a complaint charging murder in the first degree if Driskell is found sane: if insane, Driskell would be committed to an asylum...
...”Driskell’s exhibition shows he either knows something of the crime or is possessed of a peculiar form of insanity.”
